Ken Larsen's web site - DOLRT comment made on November 6, 2018

GoTriangle has asked for public comment on the Durham-Orange Light Rail project.  I submitted the following via their online survey:

There are too many at-grade crossings for this project to win my approval.  The worst will be on Farrington Road in Southwest Durham.  It’s near where the ROMF (Rail operations maintenance facility) will be located.  It’s also near Creekside Elementary School.  Farrington Road is heavily traveled by vehicles heading to or from I-40, the school, and Chapel Hill’s Eastgate shopping area.  PLEASE replace this at-grade crossing with a grade-separated crossing (i.e. a bridge).

An at-grade crossing will block vehicular traffic for over 2 hours/day by my calculation.  That will increase traffic congestion and increase pollution.  The average citizen is unaware of this negative impact, because it has not been mentioned on the GoTriangle website or at any meetings.  GoTriangle only mentions the alleged benefits of light rail.

Here's an automated response that I received from GoTriangle:

The word "substantive" means important and meaningful.

I worry that GoTriangle will ditch my comment because it contains some critcisms of GoTriangle.  They will regard it as not being a "substantive comment".

Hopefully, I'm wrong.  Nonetheless, I will check their collection of comments after the public comment period is over.
