Ken Larsen's Backgammon - STAYBACK tactic     

  

Stay back to gain a shot at a blot to win the game or improve your chances of winning a gammon.  You want to keep your rearmost checker far back so that there is little room for your opponent to safely drop checkers.

 

In the position shown moving up via 20/18(2) would be a huge blunder, -0.220.

 

Prerequisites:

  1. You are behind in the race.  Here red is down by a whopping 53 pips (115 to 168).
