Ken Larsen's Backgammon - RISK tactic

Take a risk while opponent’s home board is weak or while he's on the bar.  This is usually done when you're behind and need to hit a blot to win.  Taking risks occasionally is done prior to bearing in … diversify numbers to facilitate making inner board points easier.

In the position shown red takes a risk to attempt better diversity.  Gold's home board is weak and has a blot, so red has a green light to take risks.  The safe play, 16/8 is 0.071 worse.
